Winston-Salem, NC(May 11, 2011) -- Dillon Bassett is affectionately known as "SparkPlug" and on Friday night, May 6th, the youngster sparked his first two wins of the season, all in one night.
The 14-year old driver from Winston Salem, NC tore up the competition in Bandoleros and Legends cars as he made his rise through the ranks of short track racing and when he jumped behind the wheel of a Late Model Stock Car in the Limited division, he was a force from his first green flag. The young driver picked up his first career win in September of last season at Ace Speedway
and on Friday night he was determined to pick up another win.
The previous Friday night, another competitor had blatantly crashed the young man out after he had dominated the race and looked to be on his way to his first win in a green, white, checkered finish. This time, "SparkPlug" was ready to ignite and wasn't going to let anything stand in his way as he easily took the pole for the first of twin features on a night when the Late Models were off and the Limiteds were taking center stage.
From there he blistered the field in the first of the two races, making his presence known all the way to victory lane. Coming off of last weeks wreck determination drove the young budding star.
"I didn't know what to expect after our car was destroyed last week," said Bassett. "I knew that my dad and brother and the guys had worked hard on the car, but I didn't know if we'd be as good as we were the week before. Once we practiced I knew we were good and after that deal last week, I was determined to finish this one off with a win."
With his first victory of the season and second of his career in the bag, Basset's chance to savor victory was short lived as he had to prepare for race number two. He obviously had the best car in the first race, but the second race would turn out to be something of a challenge.
The young driver would line up third, but a missed shift on the start of the race would send him from third to nearly last and would give him an up hill battle to get himself to victory lane for the second time. By lap 13, the young driver was in the top four again and by lap 16 he blows by the leader as he flexes his muscle despite the missed shift on the start.
The second generation racer would go on to win his second race of the night and assert himself as the car to beat in the Limited Late Models at Ace Speedway. He'll be back in action with the rest of the Limiteds this Friday at Ace Speedway and with the way he's ran the last few weeks he'll be the car to beat again when the green flag drops.
